Several local council officials US-bound for Patrick’s Day

Delegations from the three Shannonside local authorities are travelling to New York for St Patrick’s Day.

The cost of their travel and accommodation is being paid for by the taxpayer.

Leitrim County Council’s cathaoirleach, Sean McGowan, jetted to the US last Thursday for the County Leitrim Society of New York dinner dance the following day.


He was joined by the council’s deputy chief executive, Vincent Dwyer, yesterday.

They are due to meet delegations from IDA and Tourism Ireland today.

They’ll attend the St Patrick’s Day Parade in New York on Saturday and Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, after which they’ll return to Ireland.

Roscommon’s delegation comprises cathaoirleach Ivan Connaughton and deputy chief executive, Martin Lydon – they left for the US yesterday.

Their trip also includes meetings with IDA and Tourism Ireland.

They’ll attend Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday and the parade in New York on Sunday, returning the following day.

Longford’s delegation comprises cathaoirleach Luie McIntyre, chief executive Paddy Mahon and head of enterprise Michael Nevin.

They’ll attend the Longford Economic Forum meeting in New York today and meet Longford-born entrepreneurs in the city tomorrow.

They’ll also attend Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral and the parade in the Big Apple over the weekend.
