Matt Carthy denies he will leave Europe if elected to contest for Dail seat

MEP Matt Carthy claims it is not guaranteed that he will contest the next general election in Ireland if he wins a seat in Europe this month.

The Sinn Fein representative is seeking to retain his seat at the European Parliament and has previously been nominated as a Sinn Fein candidate for the next Dail election in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency.

However, he claims that because that selection process took place in April of 2018, the political situation for him and Europe has changed since.

Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have agreed extensions to their confidence and supply agreement, which has seen the current government enter a third year in charge of the country and it’s expected that no election will take place until considerable progress in the Brexit process is achieved.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Carthy claimed that speculation linking him with leaving Europe to contest a general election, is wide of the mark :
