Fianna Fail general election candidate for Sligo-Leitrim, Shane Ellis, says that important climate action targets should be met across all sectors.
The Leitrim man says he has particular concern for beer farmers locally and across the west of Ireland who have limited landholdings.
He says most suckler farmers have small holdings which unlike all other sectors within agriculture, have a huge amount of hedgerows.
Shane Ellis says this is turn gives a natural carbon sick within the holding, offsetting more carbon that other agri sectors.
The general election candidate says that meeting our climate change responsibilities and greenhouse gas reductions targets will need swift action by all sectors, and it’s vital the government rapidly implements Teagasc’s Plan to reduce the greenhouse gases in agriculture over the next decade.
