Health report reveals staffing issues at Leitrim mental health hub has led to increased admissions at Acute Psychiatric Unit

Staffing deficits at a mental health hub in Co. Leitrim has resulted in increased admissions to the Acute Psychiatric Unit.

This is according to a recent Mental Health Commission report on Rehabilitation and Recovery services, which found a number of job vacancies at the Carrick-on-Shannon hub.

Current vacancies include a social worker position, as well as roles for an occupational therapist, a psychologist, a cognitive behavioral therapist and an art therapist.

However, six additional posts have reportedly been prioritised and, if recruited, this would reflect a multi-disciplinary team.

The report also found that a 7-bed 24 hour supervised community residence is still under the care of general adult psychiatry even though the residents should have access to the Rehabilitation and Recovery Service.

This provision is said to be concerning as it’s not considered good practice for residents to be “out of area”.
