Leitrim councillor Paddy O’ Rourke says he’s seriously concerned that bingo games in rural areas could be badly affected by new legislation which is to be enacted this week.
The Gambling and Lotteries (Amendment) Bill 2019, which will be signed into law this Wednesday insists that prize money must be no more that 50% of the proceeds collected by a bingo operator.
The prize pay-out presently at bingo is on average between 75% and 85% of the takings on the game.
The Bingo Players Association has launched a “Save our Bingo” campaign and plans to protest outside Leinster House tomorrow morning.
Councillor Paddy O’ Rourke says that having worked at bingo nights for several years he believes their concerns are justified and people will not attend a bingo night that doesn’t have any large prizes.
