Gardaí  have confirmed that the body found in Carrick-on-Shannon last night was that of missing man Janusz Jasicki.

The remains were taken from the Shannon near Hartley bridge at about 8.45pm.

The body was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is being carried out.

A formal identification of the body has now taken place and it’s been confirmed it was that of Mr Jasicki, who went missing on September 30 after attending a function in Carrick.

The Polish man, who was 30, lived at Bray in Co Wicklow.

Inspector Denis Harrington says the discovery brings to an end a thorough search.

Roscommon council agrees to sell historic courthouse

The Courts Service is set to be the new owner of all Roscommon Courthouse (Photo: Google Maps)

Roscommon County Council is set to sell its portion of the historic courthouse in Roscommon town to the Courts Service for just over €240,000.

The deal is expected to be confirmed at a meeting of the local authority on October 30th, and the Courts Service intends refurbishing the listed building.

The courthouse is a protected structure that was built in 1832 and is one of the landmark buildings in Roscommon town.

It’s partly owned by Roscommon County Council, while the remainder is owned by the Courts Service, where circuit and district court sittings regularly take place.

The council’s space in the building became surplus to requirements after it moved to its new civic headquarters in December 2015.

The Courts Service has since been in negotiations with the council with a view to purchasing its accommodation in the building, which was independently valued by the Valuation Office.

The Courts Service confirms it has now agreed to purchase the property for €240,800 and the transfer of legal formalities is currently under way.

It says it’s pleased with the outcome and looks forward to putting the space to good use for developing the venue with improved court facilities.

The council declined to comment, but it has written to councillors with details of the proposed sale, which they are expected to finalise at their meeting on October 30th.

Construction begins of new Lidl store in Castlerea

The Lidl store in Castlerea is set to be replaced by a two-storey supermarket (Photo: Google Maps)

Lidl is set to start construction of a €2-million store in Castlerea later this month.

The German supermarket giant already has a store at the Williamstown Road in the west Roscommon town.

Last year, it was given planning permission to demolish it and replace it with a two-storey store, measuring more than 2,600 square metres.

This week, it has lodged a planning application for slight amendments to the proposal, with the gross floor space being reduced by 300 square metres.

But Lidl says it intends to start construction later this month as it already has a grant of planning.

During building works, the existing store will be reduced in size and will continue to trade until the newly constructed store opens, before being demolished.

Local resident Seamus O’Brien is welcoming the news.

The website CIS Ireland estimates the similar two-storey store planned for Carrick-on-Shannon would cost €2.1 million.
