A Fianna Fáil Ballinasloe councillor has declared his intention to stand in the next general election in the Roscommon-Galway constituency.

Michael Connolly unsuccessfully contested the party’s selection convention in Galway East before last year’s general election.

However, the constituencies have since been redrawn and Roscommon-Galway has now expanded into more of east Galway.

This has led Councillor Connolly his declare his intention to stand in that constituency, along with Deputy Eugene Murphy and south Roscommon councillor John Keogh.

The former cathaoirleach of Galway County Council and part-time farmer believes Fianna Fáil should adopt a two-candidate strategy in Roscommon-Galway in the next election.

Local auctioneer: Stamp duty rise will hit family farms

lamb

A Roscommon auctioneer has claimed the new increased stamp duty will have a big effect on elderly farmers passing their land on to their sons.

In this week’s Budget, the tax on commercial property transactions rose from 2 per cent to 6 per cent, a measure which has prompted controversy in rural Ireland.

Local politicians and estate agents continue to voice their anger at the hike, claiming it’ll be detrimental to the farming sector.

While there’s some exemptions for young sons having land passed on to them by their fathers, Roscommon auctioneer Ivan Connaughton claims several family transactions will be subject to the 6 per cent stamp duty.
